Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a major health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users purchasing these drugs must be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team note that people who lose weight through dieting generally see a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Doctors believe the mechanism of the drugs explains the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

People who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden return of hunger.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts caution that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
