This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a dare for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy scary movies: Get comfortable with your loved one and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like conventional physical horror, but inside Together resides a deep meditation about our choices in loving each other.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for over ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The plot begins when Tim and Millie relocate from the metropolis to the country for professional reasons. A familiar narrative setup, of course, but that’s primarily where the cliches conclude. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their new home, a storm hits, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a strange force takes hold of the pair. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, blending bits of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components seamlessly and delivers them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and far away from his support system. He fears the concept of totally forfeiting his sense of self in Millie. This fear is amplified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he refrains from painting either of his characters the obvious villain.

The couple face the type of challenges that arise in long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of codependency and fully committing to another person, the symbolism never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a strong argument for staying single. On the other hand, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your partner and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can undertake right now.

Together is currently playing on Hulu at present.
