Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Major Alliance Forged By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Taking Place

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
