England and Wales Pitted in the Same Group for the 2027 World Cup in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was conducted by sporting icons such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

England and their Welsh counterparts will face off in an identical group for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a highly-anticipated early clash in the tournament Down Under. They are joined in Pool F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This draw recalls their famous meeting in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at Twickenham played a part in the hosts' surprise group stage elimination.

Other Notable Pool Draws

Ireland alongside the Scots have likewise been drawn in a group once again, just as the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, they secured a 36-14 victory, with Scotland failing to advance to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Portugal, who each made a strong impression as surprise packages in France, complete that Pool D.

Significantly, the winners of these two groups are kept apart from holders and world number one the Springboks before the showpiece match, presuming the South Africans top their own group.

Knockout Implications

Should the pools play out according to the current global standings, other top favourites like the All Blacks and France would also be kept apart from both the English and the Irish until the championship decider.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the remaining top-ranked nation on that half of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Face Blockbuster Fixture

Hosts the Wallabies have been drawn together with their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Group A.

Australia will kick off the World Cup in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee fixture aimed at launch the competition.

Elsewhere, reigning champions South Africa have drawn the Azzurri, Georgia and Romania. The French team are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the United States and Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Los Pumas will take on Fiji, Spain and the Canadian team as the tournament expands to twenty-four nations from the 20 who competed in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a last-16 stage for the very first time in the competition's existence.

Although the winner of Pool F may avoid some of the game's biggest beasts early on, they will have to face the second-placed team from Group B – most likely Italy – in the first knockout round.

A total of four of the other six pool winners will face a team that finished third from the pool stages.
