The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was convicted of orchestrating a government overthrow in September and given more than 27 years in incarceration, but he remained under home detention pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" were revealed.

This encompassed attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a public vigil that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a document approving the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on online platforms on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or see it all from your smartphone there on your couch? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the magistrate's decision was the chance of the former president's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a background of arranging to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The legal document emphasizes that the United States embassy in the national capital, the capital city, is positioned around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.

International Reactions

His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist American leader Trump, prompting him to impose a 50% tariff on goods coming from Brazil.

He is being kept in a Federal Police station in the capital and will have a custody hearing on Sunday.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that he be permitted to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he needed frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other health problems.

Background on Conviction

He was determined responsible of heading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the presidential race to his political opponent, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a scheme which included plans to murder his opponent and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was prevented because it failed to get the backing of the armed forces officials. His successor was sworn in without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, many his backers invaded and destroyed official structures in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The police intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been encouraged by him whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to take action, reestablish control and return him to office.

At the moment, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also banned from running for public office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the next presidential race.
