Australia's captain Set to Play a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series set to start on 21 November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about his chances of participating.

"It's clear that time is getting short and various factors at play, aside from the back issue, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand recently after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons causing him to miss several home seasons in a short span.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.

The selector indicated that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
